Julie and Julia : Movie Review

So, lately, I have been on a movie binge. During the past few weeks, I watched a ton of movies, some good, some average, some terrible, and some extraordinary. During this movie mania, I dedicated one week to watch some classic and best works of one of my favorite actress and the goddess of Hollywood, Meryl Streep.

If I have to describe Meryl Streep in one word, I would say perfection. I realized there is no such role that she cannot do justice too. But don't worry, I won't be rambling about her and her greatness in this post because she deserves a special blogpost to highlight all her achievements and her life. One of the first movies in my Meryl Streep movie marathon was Julie and Julia.

What is it about?

This movie is based on two true stories, Julia Child and Julie Powell. Julia Child was a very well known American chef who brought French cuisine to the American public. Julie Powell is an American citizen who rose to fame because of her blog, "Julie/Julia Project," where she tried to replicate and share her experience about the recipes from Julia Child's book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

How was it?

The movie starts with Julia Child (Meryl Streep) moving to her new house in France along with her husband Paul Child (Stanley Tucci). On the other hand, we see Julie Powell (Amy Adams) movie into her new apartment in Queens with her husband Eric Powell (Chris Messina).

Post may contain spoilers.

Throughout the movie, similarities between the lives of Julie Powell and Julia Child are highlighted. Struggling and feeling lost in their own lives and careers, they both find comfort in food that they cook. Julie Powell, feeling unaccomplished, decides to take on a project to find that missing link in her life.

She decides to recreate 524 recipes from Julia Child's book within a year. While doing so, she shared her experience through her blog to the world. Initially, she didn't find anyone interested in what she did. But as time went by, more and more people discovered her blog and loved what she did.

Julia Child, on the other hand, found herself feeling very lonely in a new country. She tried various classes and hobbies to spend her time effectively but didn't find anything that interested her. With the support of her husband, Julia joined a cooking class and learned French cooking.

She faced difficulties in terms of language differences but fell madly in love with whatever she cooked. She began to document her experiences using a typewriter. At a party, she met Louisette and Simone who shared her interests and encouraged her to join them in writing a French cookbook for Americans.

Through the intertwined lives of both these characters, the movie highlights that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness, and butter, anything is possible. Meryl Streep's portrayal of Julia Child is marvelous. She beautifully brings forth the humor, joy, and love Julia had for cooking and food. Amy Adams, on the other hand, wonderfully portrays the frustrations and struggles every woman goes through in a career she isn't fond of.

This film is all the more remarkable in that it is so rare to see a film these days that just revels in joie-de-vivre. I haven't come across anything like this before. Apart from the brilliant script and storyline, the casting was spot on too. Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina did justice to their roles.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this movie and would surely watch it again if I get a chance to do so. It doesn't matter who you are or what profession you follow, this movie is surely going to inspire you to do what you love and love what you do.

My Rating:

3 / 5
