The Unbroken Thread - Poem

Discover a timeless love story set against the backdrop of war, where two hearts defy adversity and find solace in each other's love.

In a festive square with lanterns aglow,

Hand in hand, through the Christmas snow.

"Liam," she asked with eyes so bright,

"Is there something you wish to say to me tonight?"

Beneath the oak, in a velvet box so small,

A promise of forever, love to enthrall.

"Emma," he whispered on bended knee,

"Will you be with me, will you marry me?"

Tears of joy, her heart soars high,

"A thousand times yes," her joyful cry.

A kiss seals the promise, a ring that gleams,

Love sparkling like a star in their dreams.

Wedding plans, dreams of a future so near,

Cut short by war, by duty's severe.

"Promise me," she trembled, "you'll return to me,

We'll marry when you come back, we'll be free."

"I promise, Emma," his embrace so tight,

"We'll be wed when I return, hold me through the night."

Dawn broke, with hearts heavy they part,

Liam to war, with Emma in his heart.

Letters of love, across the miles they flew,

Hope and longing in every word they knew.

"Dearest Emma," by lantern's dim light,

"Your love guides me through this darkest night."

"My beloved Liam," her letters were a balm,

"I miss you more each day, your love keeps me calm."

His battlefield chaos, her letters his anchor,

Her love his refuge, amidst the war's rancor.

A sudden attack, shrapnel's cruel sting,

Liam falls, clutching her letter, a cherished thing.

"Emma," his whisper, "I love you," his final sigh,

A single tear, as his soul took flight to the sky.

Unaware of Liam’s fate, Emma fought a plague,

In the village clinic, her heart never vague.

"Dearest Liam," she wrote, "I'll hold on to hope,

Your love gives me strength, with it I cope."

Her health declined, disease took its toll,

Yet her spirit stayed strong, love her soul.

With a photograph of Liam, her breath grew thin,

"Stay strong," she whispered, recalling him.

"Liam, I love you," her final breath,

"I’ll see you soon," even in death.

Their story became legend, love so true,

A testament to what love can do.

Beneath the oak where love first sparked,

Villagers left flowers, a memory marked.

Their souls searched still, in twilight's hush,

Whispers of love, a gentle rush.

  1. What a beautifully heart breaking poem. Yet I find solace in the fact that neither would have to live without the other. My favorite lines, "His battlefield chaos, her letters his anchor,
Her love his refuge, amidst the war's rancor."

  2. It's beautifully crafted. But a broken heart, unrequited love, wars and sickness, are so sad.

  4. So heartbreakingly sad. Your poignant poetry touches a chord but I like happy endings Felicia.😢 Thankfully Emma was unaware and didn't have to bear the agony of his death. That would have been too much for me to read I guess.

  7. Very very touching. Why do love stories always have to be sad? Can't true love have a smooth journey? I always wonder.

  14. It began so well and then when I realised Liam is in the army, my heart broke. A poem about the power of love, in sickness and in death, how it unites. Beautifully written, Felicia.

  18. That's one love story that flew by, each episode of the story was worth reading through. The story might have ended sad as the two lovers died but how it was made/written made the story/poem much more beautiful to read. - MommyWithAGoal
